Question & Answer

What was the thinking behind your artwork?

Asia is such an interesting meld of people, culture and ideas, constructed not just by the shifts in history and time, whether it's the Chinese migrating to Singapore, or the Dutch influencing Malacca, but also by the undeniable assimilation of modern day mass media. This contemporary Asian context is a medley of vintage and present, local and global, where boundaries have blurred and new identities created. The artwork represents the idea of the new Asia super mix, a visual synthesis of various cities that have inspired and amazed me. But above all, they represent the realization that all these places and things got interesting only because someone thought about and actually did something about it. So I'm putting forth a mantra for everyone, to go forth to do what they want to, which will make Asia much more interesting. And amaze somebody, like me.

A great mix of people, cultures and, of course, food.

What influence does your heritage have on your work?

There's a great acceptance of and exposure to different cultures in Singapore, it's like a hotpot of Asia being brewed on this little island. The idea that such diversity could work so well encourages experimentation to find new forms and balance in my work.

I take a lot of photos, which end up in the visual art that I create.
