Based in Singapore, Critica is a design and animation company, specialising in blending motion graphics and typography with 3D and live-action. Founded in 2005 by Xavier Oon, its diverse styles “are constantly evolving to innovate and push back the boundaries in the progressive world of contemporary motion graphics”. Inspired by “great ideas and urban sub-cultural influences”, its recent work has won accolades at the Promax and BDA festivals. Along with judging award shows, Critica contributes actively to pro bono causes and exhibitions.

What does your city mean to you?

Contemporary Asia meets westernized Chinatown.


What influences does your heritage have on your work?

Rich colors and great texture. I often travel to the far-flung reaches of Asian cities and get my inspiration from the street culture I find there. The more chaotic, the better!

What are the biggest influences on your work?

Besides traveling to exotic countries, I am influenced greatly by Asian textures and heritage.


Have you had any formal training in the arts ?

No, I studied film and video, but I am self taught in design and animation. I started out doing mock-up flyers for clubs, as they give you a pretty wide scope of freedom in aesthetic terms.

What city would you most like to visit & why?

Cairo. Pictures there would be so amazing!

Where do you hang out?

One Rochester, Dempsey Road, Tanjong Beach, Little India, Chinatown, Haji Lane, Holland Village.

Name your favourite bars and why they are special to you ?

Zouk and Scarlett. New places are interesting because their concepts are still fresh!

Name one film everyone should see.

Who are your favourite bands/musicians/DJ's?

U2, Depeche Mode, Postal Service, Felix Da Housecat, Brian Eno, DJ Krush, DJ Shadow, Massive Attack, Air, Melody Club, VHS Or Beta.

If you had to do another job, what would you choose ?

I would want to be a film director.
